This tutorial will teach you how to merge 2 fields in FileMaker (or, in other words, add the contents of one field to another field)
This is an advanced SignAgent Pro™ tutorial.
1. Perform Synchronization
Performing a synchronization before starting has 2 purposes.
1. It ensures that all of your data is completely up to date.
2. If anything goes wrong, you can simply use the files in the ARCHIVE folder again. You don't have to worry about losing any data.
2. Identify the Fields to Merge
We're going to be outlining this tutorial with an example...
We've got a project with a large location plan, and we've been adding a general location to the Notes field, based on the Architectural Grid.
We would like to add these Notes to the Number field for more concise and efficient documentation.
So, we would like for our Number fields to display C8-002, D4-004, B1-006, etc.
3. Replace Field Contents
1. Select the field that will be changing (in our example, the Number field)
2. Go to Records > Replace Field Contents (or press Command + = on Mac, or Ctrl + = on PC)
4. Replace with Calculated Result
Select Replace with calculated result: (or click Specify...)
5. Enter Calculation
Now we enter the Specify Calculation dialog, a tool that is very powerful. You can replace the contents of this field across all records in your found set with a calculated result.
For this example, we want to combine 2 fields and put a dash "-" in between them.
To do this, we use the & tool. This combines the contents of 2 fields or calculations.
As you can see above, we are using the formula Notes & "-" & Number to combine Notes, -, and Number
We chose the field names from the list on the left.
We are putting the - in quotation marks so that FileMaker doesn't confuse it with a minus-sign.
When you're done, click OK, and then click Replace.
Note: There are many other formulas that you can use in the list on the right. Feel free to check them out if you like!
Success! The Notes field has been added to the Number field.
You can use this technique to combine fields with other fields, calculations, text, and more!
Let's say your Room ID's are in the following format:
First, do a search for Room IDs (A1, in our example)
Merge their fields like this
Use the following phrase: Level & " " & Number & ¶ & ¶ & Message & ¶ & "[braille]"
Note that we put a space in quotation marks between Level and Number
A line break is represented by a ¶
[braille] is also in quotation marks (as it is just text)
You can see that the message field is now in the proper format for Room IDs
Note that I am viewing the SIGN table in the expanded layout to better show the multi-line messages
